Are there early signs of throat cancer? What is the prevention of this insidious disease? Is smoking the main reason for it?
In all developed countries a major and theoretically easily removable carcinogenic factor for the cancer of some of the organs is smoking. It has also been established that there is a direct correlation between the duration of smoking, the number of smoked cigarettes and the likelihood of the occurrence of throat cancer and lung cancer. People who smoke 40 cigarettes daily for 20 years suffer from throat and lung cancer 40-50 times more often than those who smoked less than 10 cigarettes a day. It is also known that the sensitivity of women to nicotine carcinogens is twice as high as that of men. But it will not be true if we say that cigarettes are the only cause of the throat cancer. For cancer in the oral cavity, sip and throat adds another harmful habit – the abuse of alcohol. There is irrefutable evidence of the high carcinogenicity of alcohol abuse, not only from hard alcohol but also when using alcoholic beverages.
Certainly, working conditions in some industries are of course also important. High carcinogenic hazard are:
• gases and dust in asbestos-cement and pulp and paper shops;
• in the aluminum industry;
• in the production of paints and varnishes;
• petrol vapor and many others.
The risk groups of throat cancer are truck drivers and tractors drivers and welders. Along with the harmful environment, most of them smoke and often drink alcohol.
The causes of the degeneration of the normal cell in the tumor at all, and in the throat in particular, as we know, are unknown. But it is certain that the tumor does not occur suddenly. It has already been established that malignant tumors do not occur in healthy tissues. Their appearance is always preceded by developing pathological changes in tissues that have existed for years. Here we are talking about papillomas, adenomas, leukoceratoses and chronic inflammation of the throat. Not all chronic processes turn into tumor, but all reduce the resistance of the lining of the throat and the whole organism to disease.
Throat Cancer – Should I worry about the hoarse voice?
The signs of a tumor in the throat are different and depend on the form, the place of occurrence and the degree of dissemination. In the initial period, the throat cancer is accompanied by minor symptoms: feeling of irritation, tickling, feeling of a foreign body in the throat, swallowing discomfort, tingling tiredness during conversation. But all of them are symptoms and complaints seen in a number of non-cancerous conditions. Further, the complaints depend on localization of the tumor in different parts of the throat. Often, tumors occur in the upper parts of the throat and do not cause disturbing feelings for a long time. As long as the tumor reaches significant proportions, sensations of a foreign body appear in the throat, the timbre of the voice changes – it becomes deaf and cheeky. These changes often are noticed by the surrounding, not by the patient himself. The voice is crunchy and if the tumor spreads to the vocal cords. Crying at first is inconsistent and with different tone, but the sick rarely pay attention to this warning. According to the growth of the tumor, the flesh is increased to a complete loss of voice. Further choking occurs during eating, difficulty and pain when swallowing, difficulty in breathing. The pain often moves to the ear. Tumor growth narrows the void. So many patients turn up with complaints of shortness of breath when walking or exercising. Breathing in this case develops slowly, gradually, the body becomes accustomed to it, and the sick do not feel the shortage of air for a long time.
Large tumors produce saliva, sometimes with blood, unpleasant breath of the mouth and cough, especially during eating. In a number of cases, in throat cancer before the symptoms appear, the neck produces painless, thickened formations. Very often, the sick are mistaken that it is an increase in lymph nodes from colds and inflammation and they do not turn to help. Tumors in voice connections manifest significantly earlier than other neoplasms in the throat. Even if it is as little as a grain, it causes changes in the voice. At first, the voice of the patient is bursting, and then it becomes crunching. Occasionally, tumors in any department of the throat grow into adjacent organs – the root of the tongue, sinuses, trachea, etc. In such a condition, pain occurs when swallowing, voice changes and breathing changes as well. And when the tumor grows in the thyroid cartilage, even the configuration of the throat changes – it expands and hurts when touched. But, remember that the onset of these symptoms does not yet mean throat cancer. So, make sure you review and explore in time to find the right diagnosis.
