Tumor marker CA 125 – Definition and Purpose of tumor marker test
Tumor marker CA 125 or a cancer antigen is a protein which is found in increased amounts in the blood in conditions and diseases such as myoma, uterine cancer, ovarian tubes, endometriosis, and inflammatory diseases of the pelvic organs, cirrhosis, pregnancy and normal menstruation. CA 125 is not enough accurate screening Premenopausal women because many benign conditions raise the level in the blood. On the other hand ovarian cancer at early stages can occur with normal levels of tumor marker CA 125.
What is the purpose of tumor marker test?
The test shall be appointed to monitor the response to cytostatic treatment of established cancer of the female reproductive organs. It can be used for screening high – risk groups of women or to establish a recurrence of cancer after treatment or remission. The test has no reliable diagnostic value and should not be used as a diagnostic method! Secure diagnosis is made only by biopsy.
The test itself is not associated with a risk. A potential risk is in the interpretation of results, which can lead to unjustified additional tests and untimely alarm. The test is not definitive and diagnostic and directing. It is likely if there are higher values of tumor marker CA 125, your doctor to repeat the test and to recruit others, – informative research.

The test is performed by taking venous blood
Depending on the case, the test is interpreted differently. Normal considered levels below 35 U / ml. If there is a history of cancer of the female reproductive organs and levels of tumor marker CA 125 are high despite treatment, the most likely response to treatment is not good. If in the course of treatment carried out CA 125 fall – probably the tumor responds to treatment. Accordingly, if after normalization of the level marker rise again – there is a possible relapse. In women without a history of cancer test should be interpreted carefully.
